Kim Cattrall in "Sex and the City - The Movie"
Sie ist auf der Bühne, im TV und auf der großen Kinoleinwand gleichermaßen zu Hause: Kim Cattrall. In Liverpool geboren und auf Vancouver Island in British Columbia aufgewachsen - ihre Eltern wanderen mit ihr nach Kanada aus, als sie drei Monate alt war -, zog Cattrall im Alter von 16 Jahren allein nach New York, um dort eine Ausbildung an der American Academy of Dramatic Arts anzutreten.

Nach ihrem Abschluss verpflichtete sie Regisseur Otto Preminger auf Anhieb für einen Fünfjahresfilmvertrag und besetzte sie in "Unternehmen Rosebud" (1974). Später sah man Kim Cattrall häufig in TV-Serien und -Filmen wie etwa an der Seite von Jack Lemmon in Bob Clarks Komödie "Ein Sommer in Manhattan" (1980) oder auch in Ralph L. Thomas' Drama "Das süße Wort Verheißung" (1981). Zuvor spielte Kim Cattrall bereits Episodenrollen in Serien wie "Quincy" (1976), "Starsky und Hutch" (1978), "Trapper John, M.D." (1979) und "Drei Engel für Charlie" (1979), nachdem Preminger ihr bereits eine Minirolle in dem Agententhriller "Unternehmen Rosebud" (1974) verschafft hatte. Danach sah man sie in an der Seite von Peter Falk alias Columbo in der Krimi-Folge "Mord per Telefon" (1978).

Anfang der Achtzigerahre folgte dann eine Kinorolle auf die nächste: Bob Clark verpflichtete sie erneut für eine Rolle, dieses Mal für seine Teenager-Komödie "Porky's" (1981), man sah sie mit Steve Guttenberg in dem Blockbuster "Police Academy I - Dümmer als die Polizei erlaubt" (1984), dem sechs immer schlechtere Fortsetzungen folgten, und wieder unter Regisseur Clark in der Komödie "Das Schlitzohr" (1984) mit Timothy Hutton. 1985 stand Kim Cattrall mit Jean-Paul Belmondo und Guy Marchand für Alexandre Arcadys gelungene Krimikomödie "Der Boss" vor der Kamera.

Ein Kassenknaller folgte 1986 mit der Actionkomödie "Big Trouble in Little China" von John Carpenter. Hier mimte Cattrall die Gespielin von Kurt Russell, und im Jahr drauf standen mit "Mannequin" eine Komödie und "Masquerade - Ein tödliches Spiel" ein Thriller auf dem Drehplan, während "Midnight Crossing - Nur das Meer ist ihr Zeuge" (1988) mit Faye Dunaway ein eher unterdurchschnittlicher Thriller war.

1989 gehörte Kim Cattrall dann zum stargespickten Cast von Richard Lesters Abenteuerfilm "Rückkehr der Musketiere", Brian De Palma besetzte die schöne Blonde in seiner ausgezeichneten Komödie "Fegefeuer der Eitelkeiten" (1990), und 1991 folgten Auftritte in Nicholas Meyers Sciencefiction-Werk "Star Trek VI - Das unentdeckte Land" und neben Kris Kristofferson in Kevin James Dobsons Western "Weihnachten in der Wildnis".

Nach der Hauptrolle in dem Sciencefiction-Thriller "Split Second" (1992) folgten Rollen in den TV-Mehrteilern "Wild Palms" und "Angel Falls" (beide 1993) sowie die weibliche Hauptrolle in den ein wenig an den Haaren herbeigezogenen Thriller "Der Skalpell-Mörder" (ebenfalls 1993). "Tödlicher Betrug" (1994) zeigte Kim Cattrall dann an der Seite von "Superman" Christopher Reeve und "Countdown des Schreckens" (1994) war ein Spionagefilm mit "L.A. Law"-Star Harry Hamlin. Danach sah man sie neben Jamie Lee Curtis in dem TV-Film "Verlorene Träume" (1995), den Paul Bogart nach dem mit dem Pulitzer-Preis gekrönten Bühnenstück "The Heidi Chronicles" inszenierte, sowie in dem sehenswerten John Dahl-Thriller "Im Augenblick des Todes" (1995) und in "Hysteria" (1996). Nicht weiter erwähnenswert sind dagegen Kim Cattralls Rollen in dem Sciencefiction-Film "Lethal Invasion - Attacke der Alien-Viren" (1997) und in dem Horrorstreifen "Creature - Tod aus der Tiefe" (1998).

Dagegen sorgte die von Kim Cattrall in der Serie "Sex and the City" verkörperte femme fatale Samantha Jones für Aufsehen bei der Kritik und brachte ihr sowohl eine Golden-Globe- und eine Emmy-Nominierung ein (den Golden Globe gewann sie dann 2003). 1999 schließlich spielte Kim Cattrall mit Treat Williams in dem Thriller "36 Stunden bis zum Tod" und 2001 hatte sie einen kurzen Cameo-Auftritt in John Herzfelds Actionthriller "15 Minuten Ruhm". Und falls Kim Cattrall einmal nicht mit TV- oder Kinodreharbeiten beschäftigt ist, spielt sie leidenschaftlich Theater, so etwa in Tschechows "Drei Schwestern", in Arthur Millers "A View From The Bridge" oder auch in Strindbergs "Miss Julie". Ihr Broadway-Debüt gab sie übrigens an der Seite von Ian McKellen in Tschechows "Wild Honey".
